Dr. Michael SeversonNearly 25 percent of board certified pediatricians reside/practice in greater Minnesota (outside the seven-county metro area). Yet 45 percent of Minnesota's children between the ages of 0 and 19 live in these other 80 counties.

Chaired by Michael Severson, MD, FAAP, the Rural Health Committee has been meeting for more than 10 years to support and recruit pediatricians in rural areas. Membership is open to any FAAP, however, the committee is organized to meet the special needs of pediatricians who practice in rural Minnesota.

Committee activities include:

  • Promoting an annual Rural Health Committee meeting in May (see details below)
  • Supporting opportunities for participation in activities through conference calls for all MN-AAP work groups
  • Developing a rural health primary care rotation for interested pediatric residents
  • Promoting linkages of rural primary care providers with pediatric residents and other pediatricians
  • Promoting information on Minnesota and federal loan forgiveness programs for pediatricians who choose to work in qualifying rural and urban practices.
