Newborn screening, the MNAAP’s central legislative goal for 2014,cleared its first legislative hurdles on March 5. With testimony from MNAAP’s physician leaders and parents impacted by the newborn screening, the effort to restore the state’s newborn screening program took its first steps to become law. Up next are stops in the committees that focus upon data and privacy matters.
An effort to strengthen the state’s anti-bullying statute saw new life at the Capitol this week, as the “Safe Schools for All” legislation passed out of the Senate Education Committee. The bill, of which the MNAAP is a coalition partner seeking the bill’s passage, came within a few hours of becoming law in 2013, though not enough time remained in the session.
The 2014 Pediatrician’s Day at the Capitol is set for March 26, 2014. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the legislative issues that affect Minnesota’s young patients. An afternoon of education, advocacy, and fun, it’s a terrific opportunity to lend a hand in the MNAAP’s advocacy work at the Capitol. Make plans to join us!
